I.S. 2K in the Nolting Machine

Before you make any adjustments to your Intellistich, you should make sure that this is something that you really need to do.
Your machine may change a little bit over time. As the machine gets some wear on it, it will usually loosen up. This means that you may have to lower the power of some of the settings to avoid over run. Over run is when the machine stops, but the machine is so loose that the mechanical parts move farther than desired.
If the machine seems to get tighter over time, you should check to see what is binding. It may be just a dirty hook assembly or you may have a bearing dragging. Before you adjust, it is a good idea to clean and oil the machine.

One thing to always remember, the Intellistich is not connected to the mechanical parts of your machine. For example: if the hook timing seems to be off, you canít reset it by adjusting the Intellistich.
The Intellistich runs the motor only. It controls the amount of power sent to the motor and when the power is sent to the motor.
The Intellistich relies on three optical encoders to send it signals. When these signals are sent, the Intellistich then knows when to fire power to the motor, and how many times to power the motor.
For example: If you have your Intellistich set on twelve stitches per inch and move your machine one inch, the Intellistich will start and stop the motor twelve times. This will create twelve uniform stitches. When the machine is ran on the "free" side or the % side, the motor runs at a constant speed. Therefore, your movement regulates the stitch length. If you move slowly, you will get small stitches. If you move fast, you will get longer stitches.

Two of the encoders are mounted in line with the track system on the machine and table. One encoder is mounted on the side of your Nolting machine between the front and rear axles. Another encoder is mounted on the cross track of the table. The encoder on the cross track sends a signal through a phone cord to the mother board which is mounted in the top of the machine, telling the machine that you are moving it from left to right, and the speed in witch you are moving. This left and right movement is called the "X" axis. The encoder on the side of the machine also tells the motherboard when you are moving and how fast. This forward and backward motion is called the "Y" axis. In turn, the motherboard knows when you are moving and also how fast you are moving. Therefore it knows when to fire power to the motor and how many times.

The third encoder is mounted on the back of the machine, located right behind the motor. This encoder is connected to the motor pulley with a connector called the encoder plug. This encoder is set when the Intellistich is programmed. It is called the motor encoder or needle encoder. This encoder just marks one position. It tells the motherboard the position of the needle, so that when you stop sewing, it can send power to the motor and rotate the machine enough to move the needle to the proper position. You will notice that the machine always locates this position when you first power it up.
When the Intellistitch is programmed at the factory, it is tested on the twelve stitches per inch setting. At a speed of approximately two inches per second. Then these stitches are counted. If the machine stitches eleven to fourteen stitches per inch, then it is O.K. If it stitches more or less, then an adjustment is made. Keep in mind that the stitch length will not be 100% perfect all of the time. At this time, there doesn't seem to be a stitch regulator out there this precise, but they seem to be relatively close and work well for what they were designed for.


Always remember that the Intellistich was designed to run at a top speed of two inches per second. If you operate at a faster rate of speed than this, you will trigger the alarm and get longer stitches than desired. If you want to run your machine at a faster rate of speed than this, you may have better results by running your machine on the "free" side or the "%" side then match the motor speed to your quilting technique. Also, if you do a lot of small stippling, you will have better results running the machine on the "free" side. This method is also easier on the Intellistich and the motor because there is not as much heat created by starting and stopping the motor.

Since the Intellistich is a microcomputer, you need to take proper care of it as if it were your home computer. It is recommended that you run it on its own power circuit to avoid any unpredictable surges or power being drawn away from your machine. You should also use a surge protector. When you are not using your machine it is a good idea to shut off and unplug the machine, mostly for safety reasons such as lightning or someone accidentally running the machine.

Static electricity can be another problem to think about, especially in the winter months when everyone is running their furnaces at full tilt. Also when handling batting and other materials, it would be a good idea to touch something other than your machine to discharge the static electricity from your body. Another good precaution would be to use static guard spray on your batting and materials even around your work area and on your machine. If you have a humidifier, this can also help prevent against static.






Another good safety tip to practice is to always shut off and unplug your machine before you do any maintenance or cleaning. This way, if you happen to bump a button on the handle, it will not put a stitch in your finger. The black on/off switch on the handles of your machine have a 1/16 of a second delay. So, this means that if you punch the button fast or just bump it, it will not start the machine. You need to hold the button down for approximately one second to start and stop the machine. The red button, or single stitch button doesnít have this delay. If you press the red button with the power on, it will make a stitch. If you have the needle down button engaged, your single stitch button will not work.

Your machine may also react differently when it is cold or warmed up. It is best to make adjustments to your machine after it has been ran for five to ten minutes. Set up mode

The set up mode is used to program your machine. This mode allows you to program the software in your machine, such as the needle top and bottom positions, the single stitch speed, the freehand speed range and also the stitches per inch. Remember that changing the software settings will not effect the mechanical settings on your machine, such as hook timing.
To enter the set up mode, you first need to shut off the main power to the machine. Next, press and hold the red button down on the left rear handle. While holding the red button down, turn the main power on to the machine. Now your machine is in the set up mode.

Clearing the memory

If you have to change the main chip in your control board for some reason such as an upgrade, Mr.Kasa recommends that you clear the memory and start from the beginning.
The memory can be cleared by first putting your machine in the set up mode. Next, turn the selector dial to 100%. Now press and hold the red button, when you do this, the machine will start to run wide open. Keep the red button held down and press and release the black button on the right rear handle. With the red button still held down, shut off the main power switch. Now release the red button and let the machine sit for approximately five seconds. You can now turn the power back on. When you turn the power back on, the machine will beep four times, this indicates that the memory is clear. If the chip has not been removed, there is no need to clear the memory. If you have cleared the memory, you need to make an adjustment in every mode for the control board to hold all of the new settings that you have programmed.

Programming the I.S.2K

#1 Setting the needle encoder alignment

First remove the back cover and rear thumbwheel from the machine. This will allow you to gain access to the needle encoder. Next, put the machine in the set up mode. With the machine in the set up mode, loosen the small setscrew that holds the encoder plug to the bottom pulley. You will need a 5/64" Allen or hex wrench to loosen this setscrew. With the setscrew loose, rotate the top shaft counter clockwise until the needle is at its highest position. If your needlebar has five timing marks on it, rotate the top shaft counter clockwise until you see the lowest mark on the needlebar in line with the bottom edge of the bronze colored needlebar bushing. If your machine does not have five marks on the needlebar, then when you have the needlebar at its highest position, use a marker or a pencil and mark a line on the needlebar at the bottom edge of the needlebar bushing. Then, rotate the top shaft counter clockwise so that the needlebar moves downward approximately ĺ". You can measure this distance with a small ruler between the line that you put on the needlebar and bottom edge of the bronze colored needlebar bushing. With the needlebar in the proper place, hold the top shaft to prevent it from moving and rotate the encoder plug counter clockwise until the red laser light indicator light on top of the machine comes on. When this light comes on, tighten the setscrew that holds the encoder plug into the bottom pulley. Now the needle encoder is properly adjusted.


#2 Setting the free hand speed range

To set the free hand speed range, you first need to know if you have a small hook assembly [ type L ], or a large hook assembly [ type M ]. The reason that you need to know this is because each size hook should not exceed a certain speed. The small hook assembly should not exceed 2500 R.P.M. The large hook assembly should not exceed 2250 R.P.M. Once you have determined what size hook that you have on your machine, you will know the maximum speed that you can set for your machine. To set the speed at exactly the right spot, you will want some type of hand held tachometer. I use a digital tachometer. You can set the speed without a tachometer, but the speed will not be perfect.
To make this adjustment, you first need to have the machine in the set up mode. Next, turn the control knob to 100% as far as it will go in that direction. Press and hold the red button down on the left rear handle, when you do this, the machine will run wide open. Keep the red button held down and check the speed, if you are using a tachometer, check the speed by holding the tachometer in the center of the rear thumbwheel. If you do not have a tachometer, listen to the machine, you can usually tell if it is running too fast or too slow. If you find that you need to slow the machine down, you can do this by still holding the red button down with the machine running. While the machine is still running, depress the gray needle down button so that the yellow light comes on. With the yellow light on and the machine still running, press the black button on the right rear handle, each time that you press the black button, the machine will beep indicating a speed change. Now just press and release the black button until you get the speed slowed down to the proper setting. If you find that you need to speed the machine up, with the red button depressed and the machine still running, make sure that the yellow light is not
on, then press the black button on the right rear handle. Each time that you press the black button, you will hear the machine beep. This indicates that a change has been made.You will also hear the machine speed up. Now with the red button still held down, turn the dial to 0 on the speed %. You can now set the low end of the speed range. There is no set standard for this setting. You just need to set it to your liking. If you want to speed it up, make sure that the yellow light is not on. Now, just press the black button on the right rear handle. Each time that you press the black button, you will here a beep. You will also notice that the machine speeds up. If you want to slow the machine down, press the needle down button so that the yellow light on top of the machine comes on. Now while holding the red button down you can press the black button. You will notice that the machine will beep each time that you press the black button. This indicates that you have made a change. You will also be able to hear the speed change. When you are done setting the speed range, you can release the red button and go on to the next setting that you need to program. If this is the only setting that you are changing, you can now shut the main power off to your machine, wait five seconds, turn the power back on and it should be held in the memory.
NOTE** If you are going to change more than one setting in your programming, you do not need to shut the power off after each change. You can shut the power off after all of your changes have been made.

#3 Regulated stitching speed

This mode actually sets the number of stitches per inch that you will get when you are sewing on the stitch-regulated side or stitches per inch side of your controller. A good example would be, if you set your controller to 12 stitches per inch and start sewing and notice that you are really only getting 8 stitches per inch. This would be the mode that you would want to change. Keep in mind that the stitch regulator in your machine is built to read no faster than two inches per second. That is why there is an alarm that goes off when you are out running your machine. Also keep in mind that when you program your machine at 12 stitches per inch, that if you have anywhere from 11 to14 stitches per inch, that this is as close as you are going to get. There is not a stitch regulator on the market that is 100% perfect, but I am sure that they are being up graded at this very moment. I always check this setting on 12 stitches per inch. If you find that you are getting too many stitches per inch and need to slow the regulated stitching speed down,first put your machine in the set up mode. After you enter the set up mode, turn the control knob to B1 as far as it will go in that direction. Since you want to slow the regulated stitching speed down, press the gray down button on top of the machine so that the yellow light comes on. Now, press and hold the black button on the right rear handle. While holding the black button down, press and release the red button on the left rear handle. When you do this you will hear the machine beep, this indicates that you have made a change. Now release both buttons and shut the main power off to the machine. After letting the machine sit for five seconds, so it can retain its new memory, turn the power back on and recheck your stitches per inch. You may find that you have to repeat this process a few times until you get the proper number of stitches per inch. If you find that you are not getting enough stitches per inch, this can also be changed. To make this change, you must first put your machine in the set up mode. Next, turn the control knob to B1, as far as it will go in that direction. Make sure that the yellow down light on top of the machine is not on. Press and hold the black button on the right rear handle. While holding the black button down, press and release the red button on the left rear handle. The machine will beep indicating that you made a change. After making a change, release both buttons. Now, shut the main power off to the machine and wait five seconds before turning the power back on. Recheck your stitches per inch. You may have to repeat this process a few times before you get it set just right.
If the memory has been cleared, than you will need a starting point for your regulated stitching speed, I have found that the best starting point is six steps down from the highest position. To get to this position, you first need to put your machine in the set up mode. After putting your machine in the set up mode, turn the control knob to B1, as far as it will go in that direction. Next, make sure that the yellow down light on top of the machine is not on. Now press and hold the black button on the right rear handle. While holding the black button down, press the red button on the left rear handle until you hear the machine beep, than release both buttons. Repeat this process until the machine no longer beeps when you press the red button. When the machine no longer beeps, you have reached the highest position. Now, you need to bring this setting down six steps. To do this, press the gray down button on top of the machine until the yellow light comes on. Next, press and hold the black button on the right rear handle. While holding the black button down, press the red button until the machine beeps than release both buttons. Repeat this process six times. When you are done, shut the main power off and wait five seconds before turning the power back on. You can now check your stitches per inch.


#4 Needle speed adjustment or single stitch power adjustment

This mode sets the speed and power of the single stitch. When you set this setting, you want to be sure that you donít over power it. If you give the single stitch too much power, the momentum of the mechanical parts in the machine will carry over and allow the machine to double stitch or stop with the needle in an undesirable position. To set this setting, you first need to enter the set up mode, if you are not already in the set up mode. Next, turn the control knob to the B1 position, as far as it will go in that direction. Press and hold the red button down on the left rear handle, you will notice that the needle will move a short distance, up or down. Release the red button and press and hold it again. You will notice that the needle will move again in the opposite direction. You want this to be a crisp movement, but not too fast. If you need to speed this movement up, press and hold the red button on the left rear handle. While still holding the red button down, press the black button on the right rear handle until the machine beeps. Than release both buttons. Next, press the red button again and watch the speed and power of the needle movement. If the movement is still too slow, repeat this process until it seems satisfactory. If you need to slow the needle speed down, press the gray down button on top of the machine so that the yellow light stays on. Now, press and hold the red button on the left rear handle. While still holding the red button down, press the black button on the right rear handle. You will hear the machine beep, this indicates that you have made a change. Each time that you press the red button, watch the speed and movement of the needle. I f you still need to slow it down, repeat this process. When you get this setting to the right position, you can release the buttons and go to the next setting or if you are done, you can shut off the main power and wait five seconds and turn the power back on and test the machine.


#5 Needle top and bottom position

To set the needle top and bottom position, you must of course have your machine in the set up mode. The trick to getting this mode set right is to make sure that when you set the needle top position, the needle is high enough to release the thread from the bobbin, but not so high that the needle carries over and starts in the downward direction. When setting this mode, I watch the take-up lever; the take-up lever also needs to stop at its top position. After you get your machine in the set up mode, turn the control knob so that it is between the 12 and the 0 or the twelve oíclock position. Now, press and hold the red single stitch button. When you press the red single stitch button, the take-up lever will move. You will also notice that when you press the red button, that the machine will beep. When the machine beeps in this mode this indicates that you are in the needle top position. When you press the red button and the machine doesn't beep, this indicates that you are in the needle down position. I always like to set the needle top position first. Press and hold the red button down, the machine will beep indicating that you are checking the needle top position. While still holding the red button down, look at the location of the take-up lever and the needle. The take-up lever should be very close to the top of the slot, and the needle should be above the hopping foot. If the needle and take-up lever need to come up higher, press the black button on the right rear handle. When you press the black button, the machine will beep indicating that you have made a change. Now, release both buttons. Press and hold the red button again, if the machine doesnít beep, this indicates that you are looking at the needle down position. Since you are trying to set the needle top position, ignore the needle down position for now. Release the red button and press and hold the red button again. The machine should beep again indicating that you are looking at the needle top position again. While you are holding the red button down, check your needle and take-up position again. If the needle and take-up lever still need to go higher, while still holding the red button down, press the black button. The machine will beep again indicating that you have made a change. Repeat this process until you get the needle and take-up lever to their proper height. If the needle and take-up lever need to go down, press the gray needle down button on top of the machine so that the yellow light comes on. Now press and hold the red button, if it beeps you know that this is the needle top position. While holding the red button down, check the position of the needle and take-up lever, if this position needs to be changed, press the black button while holding the red button down. The machine will beep indicating that you have made a change. Repeat this process until you get the needle and take-up lever in the proper position. Now that the needle top position is set, you are ready to set the needle bottom position. This process is the same as setting the needle top position, but instead of checking the needle position when the machine beeps when you hold the red button down, you want to check the needle position when the machine doesnít beep while holding the red button down. What you want to see when you get the needle in the proper down position is that the needle just goes into the throat plate and the take-up lever drops approximately 1\4 of an inch. Once you get the top and bottom positions set correctly, you are done with this section. Now you can go to the next step or, if you are done, you can shut off the machine and wait five seconds then turn the power back on and you should be ready to sew.


The next two settings seem to have a major effect on how well the basting mode works on your machine. If you canít seem to get the needle and take-up lever to stop in the proper position, it may be necessary to remove the back cover and tighten the belt tensioner a little bit.


#6 Needle return position adjustment

To set this setting, you need to first be in the set up mode, next, turn the control knob between the twelve and the zero. With the control knob in the proper place, press and hold the black button on the right handle. You will notice that the machine will make a stitch. You want the needle to stop high above the hopping foot and the take-up lever to be very near the top. You always check this position when you are holding the black button down. If the needle and take-up lever need to go up higher, press the red button on the left handle while you are holding the black button down. You will hear the machine beep indicating that you have made a change. Then release both buttons. Now, press and hold the black button down again and check the needle position and take-up lever. If they still need to go up, repeat this process until you get them in the proper position. If the needle and take-up lever need to go down, press the gray needle down button on top of the machine so that the yellow light stays on. Than repeat the process the same as above, but you will notice that the needle and take-up lever move down instead of up. When you get the needle and take-up lever in the proper setting, you can move to the next step.


#7 Precision needle return position adjustment


To set this mode, you want to be in the set up mode. Turn the control knob to 100% as far as it will go in that direction. Press and hold the black button on the right handle. The needle and take-up lever should stop in the highest position possible. If the needle and take-up lever need to go up, while you are still holding the black button down, press the red button on the left handle. The machine should beep when you press the red button. This indicates that you have made a change. Repeat this process until you have the needle and take-up lever in the proper position. If the take-up lever and needle need to be set lower, press the gray down button so that the yellow light on top of the machine comes on and stays on. Next, repeat the same process as above until the needle and take-up lever are in the proper position. When you are finished, release all of the buttons and shut the power off. Wait five seconds and turn the power back on. You should be ready to sew now.
